Black Pound Day – the brainchild of Swiss, from the garage collective So Solid Crew – falls on the first Saturday of every month.

So today (Saturday 7 November), why not put your money where your mouth is, support black-owned businesses – and help make the retail economy fairer and more diverse.

.

To help get you started, here’s a few of Brixton-based Kaye’s favourite black-owned businesses worth your time and money.

THREE TO SUPPORT

Ella Hair Design

Run by my dear friend Barbara Gayle, Ella Hair Design is the go-to destination for everything from a simple cut and colour to a bespoke wig or weave, all the while enjoying a good old-fashioned chinwag with the gregarious Gayle. Go ahead and add Ella Hair Design to your address book – you can thank me later.

9 Arlington Parade, London, SW2 (www.ellahairsalon.com)

Refill Eaterie

Nestled on the corner of Brixton Road and Brighton Terrace, @refillcaribbean is like a home from home for Brixtonians. The brainchild of Clive Biggs, this buzzy takeaway is open 24-hours a day, seven days a week and has gained a cult following among locals who come for the jerk chicken, ackee and saltfish and sweet plantain. If you have ever been to one of my Christmas parties, chances are you’ll be familiar with Refill’s food!

500A Brixton Road, London SW9 (www.refillfood.co.uk)

Ivy Nat

Former accountant, Ogechi Enemuo, has opened Ivy Nat – an Acre Lane store selling a dazzling array of apparel and accessories in vivid African prints by independent designers, the best fiction and non-fiction by black authors, statement jewellery, Ghanaian woven baskets, black dolls with different shades and hairstyles and much, much more. All told, Ivy Nat is a welcome addition to south London’s independent retailing community.
